A Grade ll listed house with extensive landscaped gardens, gifted for the use and enjoyment of the people by Henry Charles 'Inky' Stephens of the Stephens' Ink Company.

Heritage Lottery Fund – Parks for People

Stephens House & Gardens is most grateful for a grant of £2.1 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund to the Avenue House Estate Trust to assist with the restoration and refurbishment of the gardens.

The restoration will cover every corner of the gardens designed for Henry Stephens by Robert Marnock in the 1880’s. Key landscape features such as the pond, rockery and Bothy Garden will be sympathetically restored to their former glory, where possible key views will be re-established and vital repairs will be undertaken to walls, footpaths, gates and railings. An expanded playground will be developed and a new kiosk provided in the dilapidated toilet block.

The project will breathe new life into the buildings within the gardens. The Water Tower will be repaired and a new café restaurant developed within the stable block. The garage will be converted for use as an activity and interpretation centre with additional use for training and events.

This is truly exciting time for Stephens House & Gardens and following our successful bid this project will make the Gardens an even better place to visit.
